Intermediate District 287 is looking for a Float Cook to provide support across all district locations.
This position is responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving nutritious meals that meet USDA school nutrition guidelines while maintaining high standards of food safety and quality. As the Float Cook, you will travel between schools to fill in for absent staff, assist with daily kitchen operations, maintain production records, and support special events and district initiatives. The ideal candidate is adaptable, organized, and enjoys working in a variety of school environments while helping ensure students have access to healthy, appealing meals each day!
Position Details:
FTE: 8 hours per day, 211 days per year
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
This position is part of SEIU Local 284 Grade III: $23.44 - $24.70 per hour (depending on experience)

Education and Experience Requirements
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
- Substitution Allowed: A degree in Culinary Arts may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
- Physical Requirements: Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. Candidates must be free from communicable diseases. A pre-employment physical examination is required.
- Must possess a Certified Food Manager Certification, or be willing to obtain certification upon hire.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and have transportation to commute between sites.
Essential Functions
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties. Some functions listed may be more prominent than others depending on organizational needs.
- Prepares and cooks a wide variety of foods including special diets;
- Operates various types of cooking equipment such as stoves, ovens, steam cookers, mixing machines,
chippers, etc.;
- Cleans cafeteria, kitchen areas and equipment;
- Rotates stock on a regular basis;
- Orders food supplies and inspects food received;
- Assists in serving food;
- Maintains accurate production records;
- Accurately performs day end procedures;
- Operates food service software;
- Possess computer skills including e-mail, word and excel;
- Performs related duties as required.
- Travels between schools within the district to fill in for absent Cooks and Cook Assistants.
- May be required to work at more than one site during a working day.
- Assist with student events (ie. taste testing, student council, family nights);
- Assist with district recipe development.
- Attend Food Shows or training as required by the supervisor.
- Actively participate in district committees as assigned by the supervisor.
